The shell of the walnut is so hard due to its structure and chemical composition. The shell consists mainly of two layers: the outer, hard and insoluble layer called the pericarp, and the inner, softer layer that surrounds the nut.<\/p>\n

The pericarp of the walnut shell contains many chemical substances, including lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose, which are very resistant to solvents such as water and alcohol. In addition, the pericarp contains tannins, which give the shell its hardness and protect the nut from harmful chemicals and pathogens. The shell protects the seed so that one day it can grow into a beautiful tree.<\/p>\n
